Gaming With A Trackpoint Is A Confusing Mess
The trackpoint is a weird little peripheral, primarily found in Lenovo laptops, this isn't really something you want to play games with. And yet here we are because my curiosity has gotten the better of me.
I mean it can't be that bad right? A cat isn't going to be meow over this right?

    I dropped my Kensington Orbit Fusion Wireless a few too many times in the floor, and needed a replacement. So i decided to try the MX Ergo - which is a thumbball. 2 days after getting it, im already AT LEAST almost as good at Unreal Tournament 2004 as i used to be with the Kensington (which i had used for maybe 1.5 years). The main downside with the MX Ergo is that the ball doesnt roll very smoothly, but chain lube on the bearing helped a lot 👍🏻

    Thank you for this quality review. I have an Ltrac and it makes the same noise. I was curious if this is normal as it is my first metal bearing mouse. In fact, I was thinking of getting and assembling a Ploopy to try it out and see it also makes the same swishing/scratching? noise, but you just confirmed it for me. Cheers! BTW very Happy with the Ltrac - I do miss all the buttons, but I just programmed my navigation and gaming buttons to a layered Keyboard.

    20+ year trackball user and gamer here, I would never go back to a mouse. Started with the Logitech Marble Mouse and still use one alongside my Gameball. I use my trackball for everything from every day use, CAD, FPS shooter and every other genre of game except racing where I use a wheel setup. I swear by the index and second finger controlled trackballs however I do not like the thumb operated trackballs. It takes about a week to start to get used to a trackball and before too long to love it. Gameball is just what it says, a high end gaming tracking suitable for anything on the pc.

    After having bought the ploopy and used it for awhile, I like it but there are some big downsides to me. The scroll wheel is awful, adjusting DPI is easier on a mouse with dedicated software, and the shape isn't bad but if the shape was adjusted slightly it would be easier to use the ball precisely especially when clicking. The Ploopy is good but requires a significant amount of adjustment, tweaking, and modifying to get the best of it. Gameball scroll wheel functionality is great, dpi changing is easy, and pressing buttons while making precise adjustments is easier due to its case design

    • @ShipCore
      @ShipCore 2 місяці тому

      The amount of movement required for a *THUMB* trackball is much less than all these others. It's faster, more accurate, and you have way more precision. The critical advantage is that it can be used in tight spaces with a laptop with no mousepad needed at all. Your hand is essentially stationary the entire time. Adjust the sensitivity so your thumb never leaves the ball yet you can move the cursor completely across the screen in one movement. You can switch on the fly the pressure and angle of your thumb to either the tip for higher precision or the ball for faster movement and do so with no delay at all. All of these have a learning curve, where most people expect they get the new mouse then it is *not* better right away and then trash talk them. That's because its a *new* skill thing and it takes time, a variable amount of time per person, to build the motor memory needed. Most people won't put in that effort, they are looking for instant advantage. @@GRiMS2K

    I switched to finger trackballs and pen tablets over 20 years ago after I got tired of friction issues with mice causing my crosshairs to lurch. I now game with a gyro. The best devices for FPS are probably the pen tablets. The most accurate are the gyros, and the fastest are the trackballs (due to their nearly zero ratcheting requirements). The biggest problem with finger trackballs and pen tabs are the finger real estate requirements. You need to sacrifice several fingers to operate a finger trackball or pen. Those same fingers can be used to operate buttons on a gyro controller instead. All of these devices are competitive against each other in FPS games, except for the analog stick. Those things require aim assist, something I wish we could do away with altogether. I personally use a gyro because I find it the most fun. If I had more fun with another device, I’d stick with that one. Choose your favorite device and be a good representative to your method!

      I don't use any mouse acceleration. Sensitivity is based on whichever allows me to hit a 180 on a flick. How is the sensor in the Ploopy? Can it handle fast spins like 1:31? I am planning on buying either the Ploopy or the Gameball, and I can't seem to settle on a choice. I play a lot of competitive games like Apex, CSGO, etc. Do you feel any substantial differences in sensor performance between the two? I like the ergonomics of the Ploopy, but the Higher DPI Sensor in the Gameball also lures me.

    • @Raire
      @Raire Рік тому

      The Ploopy has better movement. It has less wobble when you're moving it around while with the Gameball there is a slight wiggly motion. I think has more to do with the different bearing types and not the sensor itself though. Both handle fast spins very well. Personally for competitive games the Ploopy is better, the Gameball might have a Higher DPI sensor but I find it increases that wiggly motion when you raise it up. If you're willing to mod the Gameball to use a different bearing, I say they're pretty evenly matched.

      @@Raire I've decided to roll with the Ploopy! (Pun not intended) Just bought a DIY kit last night, assembled it myself, and it runs like a dream. Definitely quite a learning curve after using mice since day 1, but I think I've picked it up quite well, I'm already top scoring consistently in Titanfall 2 pubs! The big thing that swayed my decision over the Gameball was the Ploopy's Open-Source nature, which directly correlates to it's repairability. Knowing that I could 3D print any parts that break or wear down over the years is quite nice. Thank you for the vid & reply! It provided good insight for me towards my purchase.

      Look into hooking up a Dual Sense and use the gyro as a mouse. Gyros are more accurate than mice because they have no friction. You can even use a set of Joy-cons if you have trouble shaking the gyro when you pull the trigger. I’d also recommend setting the controller on a pillow in your lap for added stability and the ability to shape resistance (memory foam is nice for this).

    • @Raire
      @Raire Рік тому

      If a game has toggle to aim as a option, I usually turn that on. Helps if you are having trouble keeping it steady when you right click. Also try to get three points of contact for your arm, don't just leave it floating in the air. Even having the bottom of your palm pushed against something helps. It's bad manners but my elbow for example is always on the table even when I'm using a mouse. You can also download the latest firmware on the support page for the Gameball. It should allow you to swap buttons around which can make things feel more natural. By default the buttons are setup in a way that I found spread out my fingers too much so I bound the topmost buttons into my left and right clicks. Other than that it a matter of slowly improving and figuring out things out to be honest. Don't forget about basic things like table height, sitting comfortably or having a foot rest. If it feels like you're fighting your body to move a certain way, it's not a bad idea to take a look at why.

      @@GRiMS2K Indeed I did! I don’t play competitive shooters, but I do play Left 4 Dead 2 with my friends quite a bit and I regularly score an accuracy of 40% or higher with the GameBall, up about 17% from my top score with a mouse. In other games I’m playing now, like Starfield, nailing headshots on NPCs is a breeze. The GameBall tracks really, really well.

      Oh, I also played through all of Halo: MCC using the GameBall, on Legendary difficulty. So there’s that as a testament to its usefulness too, I suppose.

      @@DavidEasthope What sensitivity do you use on the gameball? And do you use 2 fingers with ring finger/pinky on the side buttons or 3 fingers on the top and pinky on the side button? Got one and have been trying the past few days to find a good sens and grip but kinda struggling cuz Idk how to use it haha

    Hey! I'm using this exact trackball regularly to grind Valorant. I've currently peaked Plat 1 and I'm of course aiming for higher. I do Aimlab regularly to keep my aim well maintenanced. How has your experience been?

      Pretty great tbh. I swapped trackballs again just for fun but the Gameball so far has been the one that performed the best for purely gaming.
